Approach to SDGs
Our Mission Statement: "We contribute to the development of society and humanity by delivering safe water, food and energy."
Our Major Services: Consulting services for survey, planning, design, construction supervision and operational guidance for social development, including agricultural and rural development and water resources development, in Japan and overseas.
Triggered by the large-scale water resources development project, “Aichi Irrigation Development Project in Japan” funded by the World Bank through a loan for the reconstruction of the nation after World War Ⅱ, Sanyu Consultants Inc. was established in 1962. Since then, Sanyu Consultants Inc. has continuously committed to numerous development projects in agriculture, rural areas, water resources, social infrastructure and environment in Japan and more than 70 countries around the world. In recent years, we have also provided consultancy services in the sub-sectors such as market-oriented agriculture, food value chain development and nutrition improvement. With the increasing number of droughts, floods and other disasters around the world due to global climate change, the international significance of water, agriculture and food issues is growing, and the scope of our activity is further expanding. |
Chairperson's Message

One of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is "zero hunger". Food is an essential element for human beings to survive and thrive as inhabitants of this planet. Sustainable agricultural development and the water supply that makes it possible are essential for securing a stable food supply. Sanyu Consultants Inc. has worked locally and internationally as a technical consultant for agricultural and water resources development for over half a century. Triggered by the “Aichi Irrigation Development Project in Japan,” funded by the World Bank through a loan after World War Ⅱ, Sanyu Consultants Inc. was established in 1962. This project is the starting point for our consulting and engineering firm. Since then, we committed to numerous agricultural development projects locally and internationally, improving our technical expertise and building our experience. We are proud to have significantly contributed to global “food” support as an “agriculture and water” consultant. Our company motto is “Spirit and Joy of Helping”. We will continue to be a great 'Helping' for humanity and contribute to achieving the SDGs. |
Eight priority areas in Japan's "SDGs Implementation Guiding Principles"
①Empowerment of All People ②Achievement of Good Health and Longevity ③Creating Growth Markets, Revitalizing Rural Areas, and Promoting Science, Technology and Innovation ④Sustainable and Resilient Land Use, Promoting Quality Infrastructure ⑤Energy Conservation, Renewable Energy, Climate Change Countermeasures, and Sound Material-Cycle Society ⑥Conservation of Environment, including Biodiversity, Forests, and the Ocean ⑦Achieving Peaceful, Safe and Secure Societies ⑧Strengthening the Means and Frameworks for the Implementation of the SDGs We continue to work on the following six priority areas from the above eight areas through our internal goals, domestic and overseas business operations and volunteer activities. |
Priority Area ① Empowerment of All People |
・Steady implementation of work style reforms (Internal Goal) To prevent long working hours and improve productivity, we review our current work processes to eliminate Muda, Muri and Mura (waste, unreasonableness, and unevenness). We strive to improve the work environment for greater operational efficiency. We also review our internal systems to accommodate diverse working styles, such as reduced working hours (nursing care, childcare) and limited workplace locations. We also actively recruit individuals with disabilities. |

Priority Area ③ Creating Growth Markets, Revitalizing Rural Areas, and Promoting Science, Technology and Innovation Priority Area ④ Sustainable and Resilient Land Use, Promoting Quality Infrastructure |
・Promotion of rural areas, improvement of agricultural productivity (Domestic Department) The purpose of the Agricultural and Rural Development Project, in which the Domestic Department is involved, is to promote the “stable food supply”, “sustainable development of agriculture”, “promotion of rural areas”, and “conservation of the multipurpose functions of agricultural and rural areas” by promoting large-scale land consolidation and generalization of farmland to improve agricultural competitiveness and to extend the life of agricultural water use facilities for the enhancement of national land resilience. In recent years, there has been a demand for strategic maintenance management of agricultural water use facilities against ageing facilities and natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods. We contribute to national resilience and pass on precious water resources to future generations. Our efforts include functional diagnostics, development of functional maintenance plans based on life cycle cost reduction and seismic performance verification. |

・Agriculture development and water resources development (International Department) Food-related issues are critical for all people on Earth, but the challenges of agriculture for food production are various. Each faces diverse agricultural challenges such as famine in developing countries and land limitation in Japan. We continue our efforts as technical consultants for agricultural and water resource development to use these limited water resources effectively for the prosperity of humanity. |

Priority Area ⑤ Energy Conservation, Renewable Energy, Climate Change Countermeasures, and Sound Material-Cycle Society |
・Small-scale hydroelectric and photovoltaic power generation (Domestic Department) The excess energy generated by the flow of irrigation water can be utilized for small-scale hydroelectric power generation (dam-type, canal-type). We plan and design to ensure operational power for use within irrigation areas, aligning with the facilities of agricultural water facilities. We also plan and design photovoltaic power generation using the dead space of agricultural water facilities. |

Priority Area ⑥ Conservation of Environment, including Biodiversity, Forests, and the Ocean |
・Maintenance and management of water source conservation forests (Volunteer Activities) If water source conservation forests are not properly maintained and managed, there are concerns about the occurrence of disasters such as sediment run-off due to forest degradation and floods caused by increased run-off. As a consultant for agriculture and water resources development and as a resident of the downstream area of the river, we are grateful for the benefits of river flow stabilization and flood control provided by the water source conservation function of forests. We will continue volunteer activities to maintain and manage water source conservation forests in the Kiso River Basin. |

Priority Area ⑧ Strengthening the Means and Frameworks for the Implementation of the SDGs |
・Transfer, dissemination and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies to developing countries (International Department) In advising on agricultural and water resources development in developing countries, the International Department participates not only in national building (formulation of development plans for target areas) and infrastructure/manufactural development (design and construction supervision of agricultural water facilities) but also in human resource development (technology transfer to target country officials, agricultural extension workers, farmers, and creation of training programs). These projects are committed to the sustainable development of the target regions. |
