In rural areas of Sri Lanka, agriculture serves as a significant means of livelihood. However, there has long been a recognition of the need to improve agricultural productivity, value addition, and promotion of commercial agriculture, with a consideration for exports. Particularly in the Northern and North Central provinces, which have historically been considered agriculturally disadvantaged due to low rainfall, there is potential to discover untapped agricultural production capabilities. If realized, this potential could lead to the improvement of livelihoods for rural residents and further promote agriculture in Sri Lanka. The aforementioned task involved identifying promising agricultural and livestock products that could contribute to agricultural activities and livelihood enhancement in the region, while also formulating JICA's medium- to long-term support strategies. |
