2016 - 2022
In the Bago Region of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, the Yen loan Project in Western Bago Region " was implemented to rehabilitate and improve the functionality of four irrigation systems between 2015 and 2019. The rehabilitation of canal linings and hydraulic structures to reduce water delivery losses expanded irrigation water supply coverage. Many other issues need to be comprehensively addressed to realize the increase in farmers' incomes resulting from the rehabilitation/improvement of irrigation system. For example, the development of a mechanism to create incentives for rice farmers was addressed to use certified seed to improve rice quality. Specifically, a virtuous cycle was created to strengthen the use and dissemination of the certified seed by connecting farmers with private companies such as rice millers, thereby increasing both farmers' profits through the high purchase price of certified seed and millers' profits through the associated increase in milling rate. In addition, the project contributed to establishing a profitable irrigated agriculture model by promoting crop diversification in consideration of market demand trends and by developing and operating water management guidelines with the target farmers' participation. |
