Water supply coverage all aver Benin has improved from 57% (1990) to 78% (2015), partly due to government efforts, but the level of water supply in the project target areas of Couffo and Plateau departments remains low, and urban areas in both departments are in urgent need of securing sufficient water supply and expansion of access to safe water as people's demand for water increase with population growth. This project will develop new water sources in five urban areas in the two departments and construct water supply facilities such as transmission and distribution pipes and elevated water reservoirs to increase water supply thereby contributing to the reduction of waterborne disease, improvement of the living environment of residents, and reduction of labor for fetching water in the target areas. Our engineers analyzed the current situation in terms of population growth rate, general conditions of water supply, and water use pattern in the information collection survey to formulate a proposal for a Japanese grant aid project. In the subsequent schematic and detailed designs, we planned the drinking water system after examining the balance between the potential for groundwater development and future water demand, as well as the maintenance and management system of the facilities. Then we, after bid management, supervise the construction work, and promote sanitation awareness activities. |
