2017 - 2019
Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in semi-arid West Africa with an average annual rainfall of 750 mm. The agricultural sector accounts for 28% of the working population and 27% of GDP (2017), making increasing the productivity of the agricultural sector an important strategy to contribute to poverty reduction and economic development in Burkina Faso. Due to its less undulating topography, the country requires the development of low-lying wetlands ‘Bas-Fonds’ to maximize rainwater utilization. This project was implemented in Burkina Faso with the objective of preparing a National Development Program of Bas-Fonds and contributing to the improvement of agricultural productivity. The project area covered the entire country of Burkina Faso, consisting of 13 provinces, 45 departments, 351 communes, and 9,308 villages. Specific results of the activities include the development of a GIS database of lowland wetlands, the creation of measures for the effective use of lowland wetlands during the dry season, the creation of a collection of examples of high-quality maintenance and farming of lowland wetlands, the creation of a strategic environmental assessment, and the creation of a National Development Program of Bas-Fonds for the year 2030. |
