2020 - 2025
Agriculture in Kenya is an essential sector for economic development, accounting for 33% of the GDP, 62% of exports, and 70% of the rural population. Furthermore, smallholder farmers account for two-thirds of the number of farmers, arable land, and agricultural output, indicating that the growth of smallholder agriculture in rural areas is critical for economic development. In 2019, the Kenyan government developed the Agricultural Sector Structural Transformation and Economic Growth Strategy (2019- 2029), which has two pillars: increasing the income of small-scale farmers, increasing agricultural production, and adding higher value. The project aims to improve the income of small-scale farmers through the Small-Scale Horticulture Farmers' Organisation Enhancement Programme (SHEP), which JICA has worked on since 2006 while improving the government's agribusiness support capacity. The project is working to strengthen the capacity of rural areas to support agribusiness by identifying VC challenges for farmers and small and medium agribusiness enterprises, prioritizing support measures, implementing and verifying support measures, and piloting agribusiness support measures and building support structures. |
